What is Task Mining?
Task Mining analyzes user interactions directly at the desktop – such as clicks, keystrokes, and application switches – to make manual work steps visible. Unlike Process Mining, which relies on system data, Task Mining captures activities at the task level directly at the workstation.
Why does this matter?
Many inefficiencies arise in manual, non-system-supported tasks that classic Process Mining does not capture. Task Mining closes this gap and helps to precisely identify automation potential, for example for RPA.
What does this look like in practice?
The event log shows a four-hour gap between "invoice recorded" and "invoice checked", but not what happens inside it. Task mining records that values are being copied from a spreadsheet into three screens during that time — a step that exists as an event in no business system.
Not to be confused with
Not to be confused with process mining, which reads events from business systems, whereas task mining captures desktop interactions. Nor with screen recording for performance monitoring: the output is aggregated work patterns, and in practice the approach requires data-protection and works-council involvement.
