What is Process Discovery?

Process Discovery is a core Process Mining discipline that automatically generates a process model from the event data in an IT system. Without any prior assumptions, it reconstructs the actual flow – including all variants and deviations – as a diagram.

Why does this matter?

Manually created process documentation is often incomplete or outdated. Process Discovery delivers an objective, data-based as-is picture as the starting point for any analysis, optimization, and automation.

What does this look like in practice?

From 4,812 purchase-to-pay cases a model of every path actually taken appears within seconds — 37 variants among them, of which the business knew four. Filter to the most frequent 80% of cases and a readable base model remains; the rest is the exception landscape, and that is often where the money sits.

Not to be confused with

Not to be confused with process modelling, where a person draws how a process should run. Discovery derives from data how it did run. Nor with conformance checking, which already assumes a model and compares reality against it.
