What are Frontier Agents?

Frontier Agents are AI agents that do not react to individual requests but work towards a goal autonomously and persistently – for hours, days, or continuously in the background. They retain their context over time, pursue several tasks in parallel, and report back on their own as soon as something relevant comes up. In a process setting, Frontier Agents continuously observe an organization’s metrics, data sources, and rules, working on its process model rather than on isolated data extracts.

Why does this matter?

Most AI tools wait to be asked – so only what someone looks for gets discovered. Frontier Agents reverse that: they stay with a question and shorten the time between a problem arising and being detected. In Noreja they work as Minerva Frontier Agents on the platform’s process and knowledge context.

What does this look like in practice?

A frontier agent is tasked with keeping an eye on purchase-to-pay cycle time. For three weeks nothing unusual happens. Then waiting time before invoice approval rises by two days at one plant; the agent checks whether a new approval tier, a staffing change or a data error is behind it, finds a modified workflow rule in the ERP, and reports it with the affected cases — before the monthly report would have shown it.

Not to be confused with

Not the same as any single product: AWS used the term in December 2025 for autonomous agents in software development, security and operations, and OpenAI calls its enterprise agent platform "Frontier". What all uses share is the core of autonomy, persistence and scale. Nor to be confused with a copilot, which waits for a question, whereas a frontier agent stays on the case by itself.
