What is Agent Orchestration?
Agent Orchestration (also agentic orchestration) is the coordination of multiple AI agents, rule-based automation, and people within a shared flow. An orchestration layer distributes tasks, hands over intermediate results, manages sequence and dependencies, and decides when a person is brought in. It ensures that specialized agents together cover a process end to end instead of working side by side in isolation.
Why does this matter?
Individual agents solve subtasks; value only emerges when together they carry a process. Without orchestration, isolated solutions arise whose handovers nobody owns – and handovers are precisely where most waiting time in processes builds up.
What does this look like in practice?
When onboarding a business customer, one agent checks the commercial register data, a second assesses creditworthiness, an RPA bot creates the customer account in the ERP, and from a risk score of 70 a risk manager decides. Orchestration ensures the register and credit checks run in parallel, the bot starts only after both, and the manager’s decision flows back into the process.
Not to be confused with
Not the same as a multi-agent system, which describes an architecture made of several agents; orchestration governs how they work together – including with people and classic bots. Nor the same as classic workflow automation, which follows a fixed flow model, whereas agentic orchestration can adapt the flow at runtime.
